Imperial Fists - Finished Terminators

These guys have been done for a while, but have been waiting for their photo shoot.  Not a lot different than their first appearance, but the detail work has been finished, so I'm calling 'em done.  As with the tactical squad, I've based their shoulder markings on an option in the Insignium Astartes. I don't know that all termie squads will get the same shoulder, but I'm liking it on these dudes.

Giveaway #4 - Eldar Guardian Squad

Time for Giveaway #4!   As I mentioned in my first post, my giveaways are about getting rid of stuff I'll probably never use.  As such, they won't be the new hot items...but hey, at least they're free!  Like this one:

An Eldar Guardian squad, for a project conceived so long ago, I don't even remember what it was.  I remember they came via Ebay, and my brother played Eldar once upon a time, so it was probably going to be for him.  However, neither my bro nor I have been able to hobby much lately, and I don't want to REbay them.  So, it's time to send this squad to someone who can use them! I guess the previous owner painted them, so they are ready for the table:

Spotlight: Muninn's Brush

Not only does fellow blogger Muninn do great work, he also has some really cool ideas (check out his May Mini Challenge from earlier this year).  Right now, he's running a giveaway for the awesome Emperor's Champion model:

Imperial Fists - Terminators (WIP)

I've been pretty distracted with Dark Vengeance, but I finally have some terminator pics to share. Thanks to everyone who gave feedback on my "shooty or TH/SS" question. Obviously, I opted for TH/SS for this first squad. I knew I'd be painting up another at some point, and I thought I might want to use the rumored DV termies for my shooty squad.

If you've seen any of my recent posts, you know I've been drooling over the Dark Vengeance set, and have pretty much decided to start two new armies! Sooo,  the Deathwing models will remain Deathwing. And yes, I'm a sap and GW rolled right over me.

As with the tac squad sarge, these minis are done more in an Ultras style than strict IF. I guess I like the punch of the white helmets. More pics inside...

WINNER! Giveaway #3 - Ragnar Blackmane

Ragnar is heading back to Fenris! Well, maybe not, but he IS heading to styx of Army of the Week.  He's our August giveaway winner, via RANDOM.ORG. Styx, shoot me an email so we can get Ragnar out of storage and onto the battlefield!

I want to thank everyone who's become a follower of the blog ,and those who commented on this giveaway. I'm also noticing a lot of repeat visitors and really appreciate your continued support.

There were a couple questions in the original post about how I was planning to convert Ragnar. My idea was to make a Blackmane based on the above piece of art. Removing bits from the metal model would be tricky and might require some touch-up sculpting, but I thought I could use the weapons and wolf shoulder pauldron at least. I was also going to try to get his wolfy cummerbund. All this and the original backpack would go on one of the new plastic models with new head (repositioned to mimic the art).

Thanks again, and check back for September's giveaway!

Giveaway #3 - Ragnar Blackmane

This month's 40K giveaway is Wolf Lord Ragnar Blackmane!

Games Workshop's rendition
While I've never been a huge fan of this model, I Ebayed it to do a Ragnar conversion. I'd seen several really nice conversions that utilized bits from this original, and wanted to do the same. Well, my project list is too long, so I'm going to scratch this one off. Hopefully one of you can put this mini to use, either as he is or in your own conversion.

Free Light Box!

The title might be false advertising, but I bet anyone can make this for free. Yep, this is yet another post about making a light box, those simple contraptions that make our pics look so much better.

I've read several articles from other hobby bloggers about their pic taking setups, and I bet you have too. I'm not going to rehash why lightboxes are wonderful or how they work, I'm just going to jump into my version. However, if you have questions, just drop a comment and I'll do my best to point you to the answer. Check out my box:

Scout Squad Finished!

The scouts are ready for the table! When it came to finishing off the sergeant, I just cleaned up the lines and took the black highlights down a little. I decided not to add many markings, just the 'X'. Pretty pleased with how they turned out, the time:result ratio was acceptable, and will hopefully improve over time.

WINNER! Giveaway #2 - Space Marine Squad

Time to deploy the squad!  I want to thank everyone who's become a follower of the blog ,and those who commented on this giveaway.

Thanks again everyone, and stay tuned for the August giveaway!

SCOUT SERGEANT - WIP

The scout sarge is almost finished. I still need to clean up some shadow lines, knock down some highlights, and add the squad markings. I decided that my fluff for this I.F. force and aesthetics would both be satisfied by painting the greaves black, honoring his fallen brothers and visually tying him to the rest of the scout squad. If you're wondering why he has them at all, check out this post.

Giveaway #2 - Space Marine Squad

Time for Giveaway #2!   As I mentioned in my first post, my giveaways are about getting rid of stuff I'll probably never use.  As such, they won't be the new hot items...but hey, at least they're free!  Like this one:

I really like the idea of having an old school squad in my army, so I picked up some of these 2nd ed. minis. As usual, I got carried away and ended up with enough old school to field an army! So the giveaway for this month is one of these squads. Okay, so it's not actually a legit squad, since there's two missile launchers and no sergeant, but I'm sure you're all clever enough to get around that.

Scout Sergeant

You've seen the scout squad in recent posts, and here's their sergeant. When I started, I thought I'd simply add a power fist and a head swap. Once the fist was on though, I realized that power fists don't look quite right on scouts, even though I tried to find a smaller one. Things looked out of balance, so I set to fixing it, and making up fluff as I went along.

This particular scout sergeant took on his role as trainer/teacher after the catastrophe on Mithron, being transferred from his original company to help with the rebuilding effort. He continues to use bits of his armor even in this role, but for good reasons. He maintains...

More Imperial Fists Scouts

I just finished off a couple more scouts.  I can't seem to settle on how I want to paint things, so there are some little differences here.  I took the yellow highlight a little higher and changed my red up a little.

Also, I changed the black up some, adding in blue from the Space Wolves family for all layers.  I don't know if any of these changes actually come across in the pics, but in person, I'm liking the black better.

WINNER! Giveaway #1 - Mephiston

Happy 6th. Ed.! I want to thank everyone who's become a follower of the blog ,and those who commented on this giveaway.

Via RANDOM.ORG, the winner of the Mephiston Giveaway is pchappel of Chappell's Wolfden!

Paul, all you need to do is shoot me an email and we'll get this guy in the mail (click the contact tab).

Thanks again everyone, and stay tuned for the July giveaway!

Imperial Fists Scouts

Here are a couple of test scouts, and I think I'm satisfied with the way they came out. I originally planned to give them black pants/sleeves, but decided I liked the contrast of the gray against the black boots and pouches.

My inspiration for the scheme came mostly from this art:

Giveaway #1 - Mephiston

Time for Giveaway #1!   As I mentioned in my first post, my giveaways are about getting rid of stuff I'll probably never use.  As such, they probably won't be the new hot items...but hey, at least they're free!  Like this one:
Long ago, I picked up this Mephiston model for beans on Ebay, and  even though I don't play BA, I thought it would be fun to paint.  However, with too many projects and too little time, it's time for me to send Mephiston to someone who will use him.

You want him?  Here's how to get him:

Imperial Fists- Yellow Paint

I recently got a question about the yellow paint I'm using for my Imperial Fists.  I only use Citadel paints, not because I think they are best, they're just the only paint line my FLGS carries.  I tested several yellow combinations before I found a yellow I was happy with...and then the new Citadel line came out.  While I haven't used the new paints yet, I did buy a couple pots to include in this comparison (take with a grain of salt, I can't seem to take a picture that looks just like the real thing):

1.  Iyanden Darksun
2.  Iyanden Darksun (1) : Golden Yellow (2)
3.  Golden Yellow
4.  Sunburst Yellow
5.  My Imperial Fists mix (below)
6.  Averland Sunset (new)
7.  Yriel Yellow (new)

Imperial Fists Sergeant

Huzzah!  The sergeant is finished and so is my first little squad of Imperial Fists.  As mentioned in my last IF post, my Fists might differ in their color scheme from the standard.  If I were to strictly follow IF canon, I think the sergeants should have a yellow helmet with a red stripe or skull badge.  However, I've decided to follow a more universal codex marine scheme, similar to what you'd see on Ultras.  So, red helmed sarge:
I've always liked the mini below.  I guess I'm a sucker for the raised power fist stance.  I built my sergeant with this guy in mind:

My take on Imperial Fists

I was kicking around the idea of painting up some Imperial Fists when the Games Day 2012 miniature was unveiled.  I think it's a great mini, and I like the old school color scheme...a lot more variation than how the Blood Angels are typically depicted.  True, he's a captain and that's why he has more flair, but when looking at that old 2nd Ed. art I noticed some of the troops were different too.  Not every little part of their armor was red.

Anyways, I wanted to apply some of that aesthetic to my Imperial Fists.  I've always liked the black trim of the 5th Company, which meshes well with the black and white quartered markings found in the Insignium Astartes.  Here are my first few tests and the beginning of my IF force:

What's this about?

I received the Battle for Macragge set as a gift a few years ago, and have been collecting Warhammer 40,000 models with reckless abandon ever since.  Like many other wargaming enthusiasts, I now have piles of unused plastic.  I've started this site to work through some of those piles.  I'll post work on current projects and maybe do some tutorials (or really just how I do things).

But why 40K Giveaway?  Well, I'll never get to some projects, so I'll also be using this site to find new homes for my neglected gear.  If I can't use some of these great models, I'd like to get them to someone who can.  My tentative plan is to have a giveaway of some 40K related item every month.  This might be a single mini, a whole squad, or even a vehicle or piece of terrain.  Why not sell this stuff?  Well, I might Ebay some of the larger or more dear items.  But for some things, it'll be a lot more fun to brighten someone's day than net $3.47.  The first giveaway will be in June, so stay tuned for the 'what' and 'how'.  I'm also very open to suggestions, so leave me a comment and let me know what you're thinking.
